SIR – Regarding the recent rise in Otley’s precept, I was at first a little alarmed until I did the sums and realised it works out at something like eight pence per person per week.
What planet are the Liberal Democrats on if they think this is ‘profligate’ and the ‘end of democracy’? For this very small rise, Labour are promising us refurbished public toilets and a new centre in Orchardgate to help the community.
The new toilets will surely help tourism in the town, and as a volunteer at Otley Oxfam I cannot tell you how many times I have heard visitors to the town complain about the state of the current ones.
The new centre will give the community a much needed focal point for different kinds of services. All for eight pence a week – I would call that a bargain at twice the price!
It also seems that Labour are finally making some progress on fixing up the Civic Centre. My message to the Liberal Democrats is simple – you need to stop playing politics and think about what is best for Otley. And to readers, I would say, let’s give Labour a chance to deliver these things that Otley so desperately needs.
