SIR – Ask any working-class person what Mrs Thatcher did for them and, not remembering that she took milk from school children when dairy farmers were producing more than they could sell and so poured it down drains, they will say she let us buy our own council houses.

Those that bought knew she would not let councils use the financial proceeds to build replacement houses for those that were bought. Council house stock levels fell dramatically. If you care, write to the Government’s community cabinet minister Eric Pickles about that.

This led to an increasing number of families on council housing lists because of the increasing rents that private landlords can charge that families can’t afford. This example is one of many damaging situations for our nation that Mrs Thatcher created when she was clever enough to know the consequences.

Another example was the deregulation of the City and the banking industry, knowing full well that greed would overwhelm ethics in the minds of the leaders in those spheres. She knew that the consequences of letting the money lenders mismanage that would damage us all.

I would love to be a fly on the gates of heaven when she gets there. I am only pleased that she died peacefully.
