SIR – How easy is it to be a City councillor in Leeds?
All they need to do is watch what Bradford Council do, then do the opposite and success is guaranteed.
Bradford pull down a lot of its city centre shops. Leeds refurbish their shopping and market areas. Result – shoppers desert Bradford for Leeds.
Bradford dither over the Westfield complex. Leeds build an even bigger and better shopping precinct. Result – even more shoppers go to Leeds.
Bradford dither for years over refurbishing the Odeon which would have made it the largest concert venue in West Yorkshire, leaving Leeds with the simple task of building an even bigger and better one.
But Leeds has a problem and Bradford could cash in on it. Leeds has a severe shortage of affordable car parking places.
Why don’t Bradford council knock down the rest of the city centre buildings (most of which are unoccupied) and turn it into a giant car park and make Bradford a park-and-ride centre for the Leeds shoppers and concertgoers?
That way we help Leeds even more and make a profit ourselves.
