SIR – The crown post office network is currently haemorrhaging £1 million a week in business losses.
Gone are the halcyon days of the unionised state monopoly GPO with modern IT and independent postal and parcel delivery services making great inroads into its traditional business model, plus the excellent service given by many sub-post offices, eg, passport checking, vehicle excise duty, foreign currency exchange etc, making the post offices almost as obsolete as the telegram boys zooming round on their BSA Bantam motorcycles in the 1950s.
The latest furore of strike action inspired by a Mr Fury of the Communication Workers Union went largely unnoticed, while most ordinary citizens would jump at the chance of a job in a franchised PO outlet in a large local supermarket or other retailer.
Just as we all thought dinosaurs were extinct, a new species has been found in the crown post offices. Time for them and their union to take a reality check.
