SIR – I am not from a farming family, but write as just an ordinary member of the public.

Many of us have been appalled to hear and see just a fraction of the catastrophic devastation that some of you as farmers have experienced during the past few weeks due to our atrocious weather.

I just want you to know I have been so sorry for the losses you have incurred. I know many of you have been desperately out in all weathers to try and rescue your animals, sheep in particular. I cannot imagine the feelings of frustration and deep sorrow you must have been experiencing.

May it bring some comfort to you to know there are many who care, deeply, and that we are willing you to not give up and to hang in there until better days come.

May it be for you at this time next year, that you will be rejoicing in more clement weather, and fields and byres full of flourishing livestock bringing forth their offspring in far happier circumstances.
