SIR – UKIP’s Jason Smith (Letters, April 2) doesn’t seen averse to bending/misinterpreting the truth to make a political point.
In his latest epistle, he says: ”it couldn’t be further from the truth”, that the EU champions human rights. Excuse me! That’s exactly what they do.
He quotes Article 42 from the EU’s Charter on Fundamental Rights. The quote is not clear, but Mr Smith’s interpretation appears to be that some rights could be set aside for the public good.
This seems perfectly reasonable to me – some individual rights set aside after much discussion in the general interest, and not including essential rights such as the Right to Life.
I enjoy Mr Smith’s contributions to discussions on Europe, but I’m afraid UKIP is not as objective and circumspect as it could be – that would mean acknowledging that Europe has much to commend it after all!
