SIR – While I am not at all surprised by Philip Davies narrow-minded, knee-jerk response to your story about the refurbishment of the traveller sites in Bradford, your opinion column hardly did much to really portray a balanced view on the matter, either.
The Council clearly has a legal duty to provide facilities to a particular standard to its tenants, and I don’t see why it should matter if those tenants live in a house or a caravan – they should still be treated the same.
What both the T&A and Mr Davies appear to have forgotten is that these sites house families – families who want to live their lives and to have a base for their children.
As a governor of one of the local primary schools that has children from these sites enrolled at it, I am aware of the difficulties that many of these children face.
Running stories that perpetuate myths about people from different communities does nothing to reduce these difficulties.
