SIR – I was disappointed to read some very misleading comments by D A Moncaster of Baildon (Letters, March 19).
Mr Moncaster has again claimed the previous West Yorkshire Police Authority spent £250,000 on a quarterly newsletter that took four members of staff to produce.
As I have already informed Mr Moncaster, the newsletter took one member of staff one day to produce at a total cost of £100 and was only sent to people who had asked to be kept informed on our consultations.
He has also questioned my decision to appoint a deputy, who will advise me in my role and lead the external affairs and outreach role of my office.
I can inform him that the cost of my deputy and I will be substantially less (approximately £100k) than that of the allowances for the previous Police Authority, and that the cost of my office is being reduced by 20 per cent in line with the reductions being made to the West Yorkshire Police Service forced on us by the Government.
He also conveniently fails to mention that there has been no increase in the police council tax for the last two financial years, keeping the West Yorkshire precept the third-lowest in England and Wales.
Mark Burns-Williamson OBE, Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire
