SIR – From a report in the Telegraph and Argus earlier this month, I learned that close to The Grouse Inn at Oakworth is a memorial to the Canadian aircrew who, in 1942 en-route to Berlin, were all killed when their RAF Wellington Bomber crashed on the moors.

Earlier this week, I drove from Honley where, at the time, we had no snow, to Oakworth to find there had been quite a heavy snowfall. On arrival we met Mat, the landlord of the Grouse, and his wife Jo.

They advised us not to attempt the snow-covered footpath in our less than substantial footwear, but instead suggested, as our respective foot-sizes were similar, we borrow their wellingtons for the short walk – and promised us coffee on our return.

We accepted their offer and were able to take the ten-minute walk to admire the well-maintained memorial to the aircrew.

On returning to The Grouse, the waiting coffee and conversation was good, and I would like to say thanks to Mat and Jo for their hospitality and recommend the memorial as a tourist attraction. It’s good for photographs, for anyone in the pleasant rural area of Oakworth – then dine at The Grouse.
