SIR – There is no doubt that technology has accounted for the loss of many jobs. Mechanisation, robotics and computerisation have all made a big impression on manufacturing.
Computers have also caused a reduction in staff numbers in the administrative field, while internet shopping has seriously affected retail outlets.
One area that is not affected is the world of politics. Despite MP’s taking full advantage of texts, e-mails and computers, thus making their jobs easier, there are no cut-backs or job losses.
They now have the nerve to ask for a 30 per cent pay rise, despite their lighter workload due to modern technology.
I suggest that we agree to give them the pay rise they request, but demand that they suffer the same consequences as others. We reduce their numbers by 50 per cent.
They will get what they asked for, while the tax payers pay less for their services. Thereby everyone is happy. If they don’t like it, they can always look for a ‘proper’ job.
