SIR – Our local pub, the George and Dragon, is due to close down in three weeks time. The landlord and landlady are retiring. They will be greatly missed. Many happy times have been spent there with Gerry and June presiding.

At one time or another, football teams, games leagues, quizzes and a popular Saturday night disco have all featured here, in fact they continue to do so. However, the owners say the building is to be sold as they do not wish it to continue as a pub. Why?

I feel this is a prime example of how our way of life is being eroded – a nail in the coffin of community indeed!
