SIR – Call it morbid curiosity, but I’ve kept a list of well-known personalities who’ve passed away by the end of each year, for several years now.

August: Tony Martin, 98, popular US crooner in 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.

September: Joe South, 72, singer/songwriter (Games People Play); November: Dinah Sheridan, 92, UK film actress (Genevieve, The Railway Children); December: Dave Brubeck, 91, US jazz pianist (Take Five); Jack Klugman, 90, actor (TV’s Quincy); Fontella Bass, 72, US soul singer (pictured, Rescue Me); Tony Greig, 66, England cricket captain in 1970s.
