SIR – Documents recently made public under the 30-year rule revealed that Margaret Thatcher had said the Falklands War was the worst time of her life, yet in May 1982 she told Scottish Conservatives it was exciting to have a real crisis on one’s hands, instead of dealing with humdrum issues like the environment.
No wonder Charles de Gaulle said: politicians, never believe what they say.
One thing’s for sure, the Falklands campaign did much to save the declining fortunes of the Thatcher Government, enabling her to win a second term in office.
Let us hope no fortuitous event boosts David Cameron’s chances at the 2015 election.
