SIR – How can our judicial system think it adequate punishment to ban a driver for only three years when he has already killed a young teenager in the past, while disqualified from driving, having no insurance or licence and failing to stop or report an accident (T&A, January 3)?
The latest incident in October 2012 caused a three-car smash so severe that Canal Road was closed for six hours and valuable resources such as the Air Ambulance and EMS had to attend.
Its high time that punishment should fit the crime and as the root of these two incidents was driving, it is fitting that the driver be banned from driving for life. Imprisoning him for 19 months won’t make a scrap of difference if he is allowed to drive on release.
