SIR - I watched a news item on TV the other morning concerning a new scheme in Bridlington named the pillar of shame'.
It consists of putting the photographs and personal details of offenders with ASBOs on public display. The presenter likened this scheme to a modern version of the stocks.
Unlike the original stocks this idea could have a negative effect, the miscreants may feel that they've achieved stardom'.
If the stocks were to be reintroduced crime would be cut dramatically and a fringe benefit would be free entertainment' for the law-abiding public.
The stocks could be christened' with all the do-gooders' and politicians who are eroding the country.
