SIR - The £35 million project to reopen the Bradford Canal is to be a joint venture between Bradford Council, Bradford Centre Regeneration and British Waterways.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has axed £7 million of British Waterways' funding. It is reported that more Government cuts, a total of £60 million, are to be expected in the next few years.
British Waterways has scrapped its coming year's £5 million maintenance schedule. A spokesman warned that the eventual closure of some canals could not be ruled out. There are doubts whether some planned restoration projects will go ahead.
All this is sad news for barge owners, tow-path cyclists and walkers. Will British Waterways look again at the Bradford Canal, with its 11 locks in three-and-a-half miles - hardly a tempting voyage there and back for barge crews?
With Canal Road to be widened, a realigned, landscaped Bradford Beck, with a length of scenic bankside footpath, might be a better bet for Bradford planning department, and an asset to the locality.
