Ram-raiders used a stolen flat-bed truck to smash through a wall at a Bradford cash and carry store.
The gang struck shortly before 1.30am yesterday at Booker wholesalers in Bradbeck Road, Lidget Green.
A fire crew was first on the scene after an alarm was activated, but the raiders had fled leaving behind the truck which was believed to have been stolen in the Keighley area.
The truck was reversed into the building causing extensive damage, leaving a gaping hole through the brick wall by about 8ft long by 5ft deep, exposing shelves of cigarettes and alcohol.
Metal security bollards in the car park were flattened so the truck could be driven up to the building and it had reversed over a larger metal bollard directly in front of the wall.
Investigating officers said that inquiries were still at an early stage and it was unclear what the the raiders had taken although it was believed they had been after cigarettes and alcohol.
The truck used in the raid was taken away by police for forensic examination and officers are combing through CCTV footage.
A Bradford South Police spokesman said investigating officers believe another vehicle, possibly a van, was used to get away from the scene.
Booker Cash and Carry was open as usual to trade customers following the raid with a small area cordoned off where the damage had occurred. Workmen were assessing the area for repairs.
A Booker spokesman said: “We take matters of security very seriously and are fully co-operating with the police who are now investigating the incident.”
