LINE of Duty star Adrian Dunbar is heading for Haworth to film a new TV drama about Emily Bronte.
The actor, who plays Superintendent Ted Hastings in the hit BBC police series which reaches its highly anticipated final episode tomorrow, will join the cast in a biopic about the Wuthering Heights author.
Emma Mackey, star of Netflix comedy drama Sex Education, will play Emily in the film about her early life. The cast also includes Gemma Jones, star of the Harry Potter and Bridget Jones films, and the drama, believed to be called Emily, is the directorial debut of actress Frances O’Connor, who also wrote the screenplay.
“Emily Bronte’s work and words are full of passion, feeling, violence, and fierce intelligence. In creating an imagined life for Emily, she will live again for our audience,” said Frances, who appeared in TV dramas Mansfield Park and Mr Selfridge.
“Her story is about a young woman daring to form herself, to embrace her true nature, despite the consequences. Emily is, in fact, a love letter to women today, especially young women, a calling to them to challenge themselves to connect with their authentic voice and potential. I am so excited to work with such a thrilling, talented, young cast; luminous, intelligent, and spirited.”
Bradford UNESCO City of Film director David Wilson said the production is due to be filming in Haworth in May.
Adrian Dunbar has starred in all six series of Line of Duty, Jed Mercurio's hugely popular drama, as the Commanding Officer of anti-police corruption unit AC-12.
In the current gripping series, which ends tomorrow night, Hastings has been he has been forced into retirement. In last Sunday's episode, watched by more than 13 million people, he had a meeting with Deputy Chief Constable Andrea Wise and was told his anti-corruption team AC-12 was being disbanded, leaving fans of the show heartbroken. Will Hastings make it to series 7? Is he the elusive 'H'? Tomorrow's episode will hopefully reveal all.
The last biographical television drama about the Brontes was To Walk Invisible, written and directed by Bafta-winning Sally Wainwright, who was recently in the Bradford district filming the second series of her TV hit Gentleman Jack.
To Walk Invisible, which aired in 2016, was shot at Penistone Hill near Haworth in a replica of the Bronte Parsonage and surrounding streets created for the show. The film, which starred Jonathan Pryce as Patrick Bronte, focused on the relationship between sisters; Charlotte, Emily and Anne and their brother, Branwell.
