THERE are no free-to-use defibrillators in Bradford city centre according to a database of the life-saving equipment compiled by HeartSafe.
The website, which aims to make people aware of where the nearest automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are to them and if they are available 24/7 or only at specific times.
AEDs are a vital piece of emergency equipment when a person suffers a cardiac arrest – as was demonstrated at the weekend when a defibrillator was used to resuscitate Denmark footballer Christian Eriksen after he collapsed on the pitch after suffering a heart attack during his teams Euro 2020 match against Finland.
HeartSafe’s online database shows there are only seven AEDs available for use 24/7 in the Bradford district and surrounding areas, and a further 12 in the area available at limited times, mainly during office hours.
It also reveals there are no defibrillators currently registered to HeartSafe located in Bradford city centre, and just one located in the entire area inside Bradford ring road.
By comparison, in Leeds city centre there are 20 AEDs available for use, two in Wakefield and one in Huddersfield centres
Major towns and villages including Holme Wood, Greengates, Clayton, Queensbury, Thornton, Wyke, Baildon, Menston, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Keighley town centre, and Oxenhope have no AED coverage currently registered to HeartSafe, while in surrounding areas Birkenshaw, Otley, Brighouse, Cleckheaton and Heckmondwike also have no coverage.
This means if someone suffers a heart attack in these areas their chances of survival are significantly diminished.
