The death of a man who took a massive overdose of anti-depressants after a row with his girlfriend was a tragic accident, a coroner found today.
Dale Whitaker, 24, of Delph Croft View, Keighley was found dead at his home by his girlfriend Jacqui Ryan in July.
The coroner heard that the previous evening the couple had consumed large quantities of alcohol and later argued.
Miss Ryan testified that she awoke in the night to find Mr Whitaker collapsed on the bedroom floor but assumed he was merely drunk and went back to sleep.
It was only when she woke the next morning that she realised he was in fact dead having taken a massive overdose of anti-depressants.
Coroner Roger Whittaker said that the deceased had a history of depression, heavy drinking and mood swings. The tablets he took were not prescribed to him but the coroner pointed out on several previous occasions Mr Whitaker had taken other people’s medication.
He said the reasons the deceased had taken the tablets might never be known but that he did not believe it had been a deliberate attempt at suicide.
He recorded a verdict of accidental death.
