SIR - I am writing with regard to the article (T&A, November 11) about the proposal to return Titus Salt's statue back to the city centre. The statue was moved to Lister Park in the 1890s, as it was in the way of trams. The statue was unveiled in its present location just inside the Norman Arch, by the Mayor Alderman William Willis Wood on the August 17, 1896.
I am saddened by the fact that Bradford Civic Society is now knocking Bradford. There are some wonderful modern sculptures in the centre. I think the Baby of the North is fantastic. as is also the giant needle on Manor Row. The stone sculptures in Centenary Square, outside Wetherspoons are a great delight to children as they clamber all over them.
Where would the Salt statue be put? Whilst they are at it why not bring Peel's statue back into the centre from Peel Park?
It is a shame that the Tower of Now will only be in Bradford for a year. I do hope a permanent home can be found for it. I look forward to seeing it.
I have lived in Bradford all my life, and the centre has always been changing, and hopefully will continue to change and improve. Once the pedestrian areas are finished it will be wonderful to be able to walk on streets without having to dodge traffic.
The population of Bradford is around 340,000 - 76 people wanting the statue of Salt returned to the centre is about 0.02per cent. Not a great deal.
Maybe Bradford Civic Society would like to turn Bradford back to how it was in the 19th century, with poverty, filth and poor health!
A Whitrick, Bradford
