SIR - It was good to see that Council planners have turned down the application for yet another betting shop in the city centre, which would have made five such outlets on the same street (T&A, November 4).

The planners stated that there is already an over-concentration of such use in the area, making one wonder why they were all sanctioned in the first place?

The latest applicant, Jenningsbet, had stated that their new shop would create additional vitality in the area. What sort of 'vitality' would that be? Nothing of the sort that the area needs, surely?
