SIR - Re the T&A article ‘Parents outrage over school bus service axe’: I agree with the comments made by Lawrence Bentley, headteacher of St Bede”s and St Josephs College. The safety of children is priority. Bradford city centre is not safe for children on their own, especially in the dark. Additional travelling will put extreme stress on children.

I’d imagine some will skip breakfast to catch two buses. I understand there are 1,834 children attending this school. It is the only upper Catholic school in Bradford.

Your article does not give any information on the impact this will have on the general public who travel on buses to and from Bradford city centre. At the moment, catching a bus is difficult when it comes to timing. Buses often don’t turn up. There are already so many children from the school in the centre of Bradford filling up buses.

People who work and shop in Bradford are encouraged not to use their cars, to contribute to Bradford’s clean air zone. Is Bradford Council going to put on extra buses to and from the city centre at the time that when schoolchildren will be travelling?

I understand that at least 900 children use the school bus service. This puts me off coming to shop in the town centre. It will be interesting to know how many people who work in Bradford centre or travel through the centre object to the cancellation of the school bus services. Can the Council confirm how many extra buses will be provided to and from the city centre for public use if this goes ahead? They’re not thinking about the impact this will have on the public. Many people will stay away from the city centre. There should be more school buses, not less.
