SIR - So, yet another unwanted accolade for Bradford, now suggested to be "the worst place in the UK for the selling of illegal tobacco" (T&A, October 22).

Some of the instances described were hugely concerning, and it seems quite obvious that a large number of shops are involved.

What is needed is a massive crackdown on this behaviour, coupled with very severe penalties for those found guilty.

Indeed, let's not pussyfoot around. Businesses caught selling illegal tobacco should be summarily shut down. Then perhaps the message may get across to those involved, and at the same time assist all those many other businesses who trade legally and properly.
