SIR - Two court cases in the T&A (July 29) gave continued cause for concern about our totally inadequate justice system.

In the first a driver was punched and kicked unconscious. Mr Recorder Anthony Hawkes handed down an 18 month prison term, but then suspended it for 18 months.

In the second case two young men were caught carrying a machete and a large Rambo knife on a residential street in Bradford. Both were given prison sentences, but again suspended, for one year. But surely knife crime is a hugely serious issue?

We really will never get to the stage of cutting down on such offences when weak sentences appear to virtually be the order of the day.
