SIR - You report (T&A July 25) ' UK's car production slumps'. I fear this is the first sign of the effect of Chinese electric cars on our car makers.

Their cost of production is falling, in 2025 Chinese electric cars will be cheaper to buy than European fossil fuel cars and European EVs. They are already cheaper to run and maintain. Their quality is high. Some claim the government is subsidising the industry but near 100per cent automation, with a few human overlookers, is driving the low prices.

This is good news for car buyers and the environment. But very bad news indeed for our car industry and the huge business infrastructure and jobs needed by internal combustion cars.
