SIR - The right of juries to decide a case on their own conscience (Protest outside Bradford Crown Court, T&A April 19) was supported by the High Court in London on Monday.
It threw out the government’s case by its most senior lawyer the Solicitor General, to prosecute 69-year-old Trudi Warner.
She had held a sign outside a Crown Court saying ‘Jurors: you have an absolute right to acquit a defendant according to your conscience’. The court decided this was no interference with the course of justice.
The ruling will help the judicial system to resist the government clampdown on protests. It will encourage defendants to explain to juries their motives for raising public issues through non-violent direct action.
