The first cases of coronavirus in Leeds and Bradford were introduced in March 2020, which was a large amount of time ago, however caused many short term and long term effects on everybody. The National Health Service was highly affected, many people unfortunately lost family members or friends, and it became hard to transport to work and school for many across the city. However, technology improved, Covid-19 vaccinations were introduced and were and still are available all around Leeds after 2 years.

The cases slowly decreased however are at a low level in Leeds at the moment however it is very common to see people wearing disposable face mask in and around the city which can confuse many. A face mask is used to prevent any infectious droplets from reaching anyone you are near to or in contact with often. This fact seems to confuse many as if the cases are decreasing many people think why would anyone like to use a face mask if there’s no cases. However, there are many flus spreading around easily in Leeds e.g. strep A, scarlet fever and many people don’t realise until the symptoms have reached a highly visible phase so it’s always best to make sure. Many people use face masks on public transport in West Yorkshire to prevent inhaling any dust and bacteria from previous sitters.

In addition, disposable masks are still used to this day for many medical situations and hospitality. E.g. dentists, carers, nurses and surgeons. Nurses commonly use face masks to prevent the spread of environmental contamination and aerobic bacteria entering their bloodstreams or the patients due to previous interactions with other patients. This is the same for a carer treating a resident not wanting to spread any infectious bacteria.

In conclusion, masks are not just used for preventing coronavirus and can be used in a large amount of situations, e.g. hospitality, catering, medical situations, and daily life. It is not unusual to see somebody wearing a mask as we were all in the same situation two years ago worrying about germs, so it’s not great to shame others for this.
