SIR - The Emperor has no clothes. His loyal courtiers claim he is magnificent, and, if he is not now, he will be, but there are whisperings in the corridors. To protect him his courtiers keep the Emperor well out of sight and only reluctantly speak of him. The people know that all is not well, but have little information to go on.

The Emperor promised that he would save £8 billion a year and give £350 million a week to the NHS. In reality the Emperor’s administrators say that the Emperor is costing Britain four per cent of GDP, which is many times greater than the savings.

The Emperor promised prosperity, but Britain is the only G7 country not to have got back to pre-pandemic levels of output. Even believers in the Emperor such as Lord Wolfson are complaining that they cannot run their business properly because of him.

The Emperor truly has no clothes.
