SIR - "Early hours fireworks menace causing misery" - T&A headline, August 1. Indeed they are.
Labour councillor Si Cunningham states that the Council only has limited powers to control the problem, and that "central government doesn't seem that bothered".
But just hang on a minute. It is already illegal to set off fireworks through the night. The problem is that by the time police officers can get to a place where there is an issue the display has come to an end and there is insufficient evidence to prosecute.
Unfortunately the people involved in such activity are part of the overall problem with the outside perception of our city.
Maybe the best answer is for all fireworks to be banned apart from around Bonfire Night and New Year's Eve, with sales and possession not permitted at other times.
