WHEN a teacher’s achievements come to the attention of their local MP, they must be doing something right.
This is the case for Bingley Grammar School’s Sajeela Shah, who was nominated for Secondary Teacher of the Year by Shipley MP Philip Davies.
Miss Shah, who teaches Humanities, pushes students to engage in extra-curricular activities, runs after-school clubs, and encourages students to pursue their interests and career aspirations.
Mr Davies said Miss Shah’s “enthusiasm for her pupils’ education is inspiring”.
He said: “I have nominated Miss Shah for two main reasons: her encouragement of her pupils interests and career choices, and her commitment to extra-curricular activities as well as the teaching curriculum.
“Miss Shah organises visits from a Holocaust survivor every year, something not many students normally get to experience.
“Crucially, she encourages her students to pursue their interests, and goes above and beyond to engage them in activities that will contribute to chosen careers.
“She creates the circumstances and environment for them to gain experience and understanding of their chosen subjects and interest career areas.”
