The Bradford-born Lord Mayor of London has urged local exporters to ‘piggy-back’ on the prestige of his ancient office in their efforts to boost overseas trade.

Former Bradford Grammar School student David Wootton, who became the 684th Lord Mayor in November, spent a day in the district touring a number of firms in a visit co-ordinated by Bradford Chamber of Commerce.

The Lord Mayor said he was encouraged and reassured by his visit which proved that companies with the right business model and products could secure business even in the current tough climate.

He said: “Firms are facing issues such as access to finance or recruiting the right people, but overall, I’ve been reassured by what I’ve seen. I will go back with some very positive messages about Bradford business.”

Mr Wootton, a partner in leading City law firm Allen & Overy, said the Lord Mayoralty could open many doors. About 25 per cent of his time will be spent on overseas visits with business delegations to potential markets.

He said: “I want to use such opportunities for the benefit of UK trade and commerce. I can’t favour any particular place, but with my Bradford roots I would hope to be able to provide a conduit for local businesses to boost their presence in key markets.

“I hope that I can help generate useful links for Bradford firms and generally promote the right message for them and the rest of British business.”
