Bradford-based supermarket Morrisons has adopted a patriotic approach to cutting petrol and diesel prices over Easter and the Royal Wedding Bank Holidays.
The UK’s fourth largest supermarket chain which has 296 petrol stations. has dubbed its cut-price fuel campaign ‘Fuel Britannia’.
It is offering people who spend more than £40 in store 6p off every litre of petrol or diesel they buy Morrisons is the latest supermarket to try to win customers with the promise of cheaper fuel. Its move trumps recent deals announced by its rivals. Sainsbury’s is offering a discount of 5p per litre to people who spend more than £50 and the Co-op, headed by Bradford-born boss Peter Marks, is promising 5p off to people who spent at least £30 in its shops.
Morrisons, said it had dubbed its incentive offer, which runs until Monday, May 8, Fuel Britannia in recognition of the fact that many hard-hit motorists were planning to go away over the Royal wedding bank holiday weekend.
Inflation figures out last week showed that fuel costs have risen by 15.9 per cent in the 12 months to the end of March.
Richard Lancaster, Morrisons marketing director, said: “With petrol prices at an all-time high and disposable income down £100 a month on last year, we want to provide our customers the best deal on the market.”
“We know that over the Easter holidays and the Royal wedding, motorists will want to travel further to visit friends and relatives, but will be put off by the cost of petrol. Our offer ensures that our customers can enjoy this time and worry less about the cost.”
Morrisons’ deal comes as new research shows that more than 40 per cent of people said they would shop more in supermarkets with petrol stations offering cheap petrol, while 44 per cent would be more loyal to shops that gave petrol discount vouchers.
Information group IGD warned that high petrol prices looked set to cause consumers to make fewer shopping trips and to shop more locally.
