A West Yorkshire waste management group, which includes a rendering operation in Bradford, is investing £1.4m in greener transport technology.

The privately-owned Leo Group specialises in the collection and processing of animal by-products into meals, oils and pet food ingredients which it supplies across the world.

The company has pledged to replace and upgrade its truck fleet, which operates across the UK, as vehicles reach three years old.

It has taken possession of the first batch of state-of-the-art Scania trucks as part of its £1.4m investment in new transport..

John Ward, group logistics manager, said: “We are determined to invest in new technologies across the whole of the business and transport is no exception.

“We want to have the most modern and up-to-date fleet in the waste management sector and this latest investment marks another important step forward.

“We are committed to the environ-ment and harnessing developments in green technology. These new trucks take fuel economy, carbon emissions, low engine noise, reliability and driver safety into a new era.

“The European Union has set the target of a 20 per cent reduction in emissions by the year 2020. To make a real contribution to sustainability, Scania’s vision is that carbon dioxide emissions per tonne transported can be reduced by 50 per cent during this period – and we look forward to working with them to turn this into reality.”
