Bingley-based Sports Turf Research Institute, the world's leading sports turf consultancy, won the Small or Medium Enterprise of the Year award.

Founded in 1929 in Bingley, the company also has an office in Brisbane, Australia, which opened in 2013. The firm work with each client on an individual basis and develop tailored solutions for all sizes and types of sports clients, from village clubs to international governing bodies, to suit their requirements, budgets, resources and timescales.

Chief executive Gordon McKillop, 62, said the firm provides consultancy and research for any sport played on grass including, he added: "Wimbledon for the tennis, Ascot for horse racing, Lord's for the cricket, and for Premier League clubs.

"We do the whole gamut from local football pitches up to venues for the final of the World Cup - all levels of sport."

Other clients include football organisations FIFA and UEFA. Their golf services include designing, developing and improving golf courses and greens, incorporating greens performance analysis, course assessment and recommendations, course improvements and problem solving, course design and reconstruction, drainage and irrigation solutions, and training on golf course management.

He added: "We are a company limited by guarantee, there are no external owners. Everything we earn stays within the business to develop new products.

On winning the award, Mr McKillop, who is originally from Glasgow, said: “I feel overwhelmed. When you are at an event like this and you see the quality of the other entrants, you think it will be someone else that wins.

"We are very proud and absolutely delighted to have won.”
