DIVORCING couples should wrap-up financial matters when bringing their marriage to an end, according to a Keighley law firm.
AWB Charlesworth said a Supreme Court decision had underlined the importance of the issue.
The court ruled that a woman who was divorced more than 20 years ago may still have a financial claim against her former husband.
“The decision reminds us that unlike civil or personal injury proceedings – which have a limitation period of six and three years respectively – no such time restraints apply to financial proceedings within the family court,” said a spokesman.
“It is therefore vital when divorcing to ensure that either an agreement is reached and the terms are binding under a court order by consent, or the court is asked to make an order to prevent any further claims being brought by a former spouse.”
