A Bradford teacher is today being hailed a Community Champion for her work developing children's creative talents.

Riffat Shah is due to join David Adams, another winner from the district, at a ceremony in Leeds, tonight.

The two are among 29 men and women being rewarded for using a Government grant to make a real difference.

Mrs Shah, 58, a teacher at Nab Wood School, Shipley, is using her £2,000 to publish a book of stories, poetry, journals and artwork by youngsters from the Bradford area.

She began involving children in creative writing, art and photography projects because she felt they needed more opportunity to express themselves.

Mrs Shah of Bute Street, Bolton Woods, collated work by children in Cottingley, Frizing-hall and Manningham.

She is now planning the book's launch and says the children are very excited about seeing their pictures and writing in print.

Proceeds from sale of the 200 copies will go towards compiling a second book showcasing Bradford children's talents.

Mrs Shah, an author, also produces videos and audio tapes of local children's songs.

She said she was surprised and delighted to be picked for the award.

"I did not think that I was capable of getting an award because many people do better things," she said.

"All my life I have wanted to help people, it is my aim."

Fellow award-winner Mr Adams, of Cowling, near Skipton, is a volunteer for Drystone Radio.

He set up a workshop-based project, using community radio, for people suffering from mental health and drug-related problems.

Mr Adams recruited volunteers to act as mentors and advisers to help people overcome communication problems.
