Applicants are outstripping the number of jobs available at a new supermarket in Bradford by more than four to one.

Supermarket giant Asda is due to bring 253 new jobs into the city when it opens a 38,000 square-foot store in Bradbeck Road, off Cemetery Road, Lidget Green , on November 19.

But following a report of the opening in the Telegraph & Argus on Monday, the store had received 1,036 applications to fill those positions.

General store manager Barkat Ali said: “We have been overwhelmed with the number of job applications we’ve received since the opening of the new Asda in Bradford was announced.

“Being from the local area, I am delighted that we are creating 253 jobs for local people and I can’t wait to get the full team in place and ready to launch the store on November 19 at 10am.”

The 24-hour store will incorporate a George department, a café, a pharmacy and a petrol filling station.

On Monday, the T&A reported how a community leader had welcomed the new jobs created at the store, but warned it could create traffic problems.

Ward Councillor John Godward (Labour, Great Horton ) said the number of jobs was “the one positive aspect of the development”.

He said: “It’s a matter of the problems it’s going to create with the traffic coming through Lidget Green.”

Joining Mr Ali in managing the store will be Craig Watson, who has been chosen as the store’s community life champion.

One of Mr Watson’s first challenges will be to launch the Chosen by You, Given by Us initiative in which three local organisations will be voted for by customers to receive support from the new store.
