A lady in a cinema usherette’s uniform was giving away free ice-creams at Thornton ’s South Square Centre last night near a large cardboard cut-out of the Odeon.

Vicky Leith was taking part in an event at Thornton’s South Square Arts Centre to mark the Odeon Uncovered exhibition that opens to the public for the rest of month from today.

The celebration of the 82-year-old building, closed for the last 12 years, consists of paintings, photographs, video, a replica in Lego, and a cardboard model of the former cinema’s two brick towers, linked by a message board, contributed by Raymond Swailes of Shipley .

Mark Nicholson, one of the event’s organisers, said: “The fact that the Odeon still has the ability to inspire people’s imagination in such a visual and artistic way cannot be underestimated.”

Odeon Uncovered runs until September 30. South Square Centre’s opening hours are Noon to 3pm, Tuesday to Sunday.
