To mark the 150th anniversary of Frederick Delius’s birth in Bradford, Manchester’s prestigious Chetham’s School of Music, in association with The Delius Society and Delius Trust, is hosting a four-day Delius celebration from October 17 to 20, including a concert at St George’s Hall.
The project, created by Chetham’s director of music Stephen Threlfall, and featuring the internationally-renowned cellist Raphael Wallfisch, forms part of a year-long celebration of the composer’s life and works in concerts and events all over the world.
Mr Threlfall said: “It is important that young musicians across the country gain a greater appreciation and awareness of one of our major national composers. Through this celebration, we hope to provide a tremendous opportunity for them to become closer to the music and life of Frederick Delius.”
On Thursday, October 18, Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra gives a concert in Bradford, where the composer was born into a prosperous mercantile family in 1862.
Wallfisch, a long-time friend of the school and Delius advocate, performs the Cello Concerto. The orchestra also performs Florida Suite, written during the time Delius lived in the US.
The concert starts at 7.30pm. The box office number is (01274) 432000.
