Among the pictures on show at the Interpretations of Saltaire exhibition at Saltaire Festival are seven new paintings by Bingley ’s Jane Fielder.
A nocturnal stroll in the village so stimulated her that she rushed home and started work at once – using sandpaper to produce a particular effect.
She said: “I was so excited I went home and painting after painting burst out.
“I rarely use photos as an aid to my work, but on this occasion I decided to and found it stimulating, taking small sections of light and emphasising them with the dark around. It all became quite frenzied.
"I didn't want to paint the church as it is such an obvious subject and so often recorded, but in the end I just had to. It looked so magnificent. I used sandpaper and sprinkled red pastel into the wet watercolour.
“They are all worked in watercolour with some charcoal and pastel too. There are seven in all.”
The use of different shades of blue and yellow, especially in the painting of the railway station, gives the pictures an Expressionistic feel – different to the style that has made her Janescapes so popular.
Jane’s pictures are part of Aire Valley Arts exhibition’s Interpretations of Saltaire show at The Exhibition Building, Exhibition Road, Saltaire, all this weekend from 10am to 5pm.
