A workman who was part of a team who discovered ten silver trophies stolen in a raid on a golf club found out about the burglary after contacting a friend whose name was etched on one of the cups.
The silverware was spotted in Bridgehouse Beck, Haworth , more than a week after it was stolen during a break-in at Branshaw Golf Club in Oakworth , Keighley .
Paul Large, who was leading the team working on the sewer relief scheme, said: “We were looking for an outlet that runs into the beck and one of the lads saw something glistening in the water and what looked like a plaque. We couldn’t believe it when it turned out to be all these trophies.
“When we got them out of the water and washed off the silt we could see the Branshaw Golf Club name and one lad noticed a friend’s name inscribed. He rang him and learned about the theft.”
The trophies have now been returned to the club. Secretary, Simon Jowitt said they were damaged, but most were repairable.
