Talented tenants of the district’s largest social landlord, Incommunities, were celebrated yesterday at the organisation’s 2012 star awards.

More than 150 people attended the prize presentation at the Midland Hotel, Bradford, where winners in the seven categories were announced.

Afterwards, Incommunities bosses described the winners as a “magnificent seven” of local stars who had demonstrated great pride in the areas where they lived.

The winners were: 

* Individual Garden/Display – Mark Shaw of Swain House , Bradford; l Communal Garden – Brenda Templeton and her small gardening group at North Beck House, Keighley ; 

*  Kidz Korner Garden – Daniel Spillane of Scholemoor, Bradford, who has transformed the back and side gardens where he lives; 

* Rising Star – Nathan Connelly, of Keighley, who is an active volunteer using sport, music and fitness as a “force for good” and was nominated for being a “positive role model for young people”; 

* Community Star – The Committee of Ormond House, Wibsey , who were described as the “best in the city” and were singled out for praise in a poem for their hard work in helping others in need;

* Star Neighbour – Harry Tillotson, of Wyke , whose winning nomination described how he is always willing to offer help and added: “He is humble, loving and caring, the type of neighbour everyone would like to have.”; 

*  Star Employee – Mohammad Usman, of Neighbourhood Services, who was nominated by four different tenants who praised his “helpfulness and understanding”, saying he “goes that extra mile”.

Geraldine Howley, Incommunities Group chief executive, said: “The star awards are all about celebrating the inspiring work of individuals and groups.

“This year the awards focused on finding our ‘magnificent seven’ of local stars, but everyone from those nominated to people who have taken the time to make nominations deserve special praise.

“These awards demonstrate the pride that individuals and groups have in where they live.”

Martin Smith, Incommunties Group chairman said: “These awards are a fantastic showcase of peoples’ talents and the community spirit shown right across our neighbourhoods. Every year they put the spotlight on our many proud residents and unsung heroes and how they are ‘Improving lives Incommunities’.

“Congratulations to all the award winners and all those nominated. You are the stars of our community.”

Each winner received a trophy and a gift voucher. There were also runners-up prizes in each category.

Before the winners were revealed and the awards presented, those attending were treated to a masterclass from floral designer Jonathan Moseley and a live performance by stars of Bradford’s Rock School.

There were also presentations from Incommunities’ Way to Green Team and the food co-operative Roots & Fruits, based at Thorpe Edge .
