Members of the Osmond family yesterday brought music to the ears of children, parents and staff at a Bradford family centre which supports pre-school children with hearing loss.
Earlier this year, the world-famous Osmond family set up a new foundation in the UK – The Hearing Fund UK – to raise money for children living with hearing loss and their families.
The family has a unique insight into hearing loss.
It was the dream of the late Olive Osmond to help deaf children around the world as two of her sons – Virl and Tom – were deaf.
Her grandson Justin, who is also 90 per cent deaf, set up the Olive Osmond Hearing Fund in the US in honour of his grandmother and is now seeing the fund spread its reach to the UK.
Each year it will choose a registered charity in the UK to be the beneficiary of its funds. The first charity partner is The Elizabeth Foundation, a national charity with two family centres for newborn to five-year-old deaf children and their families – one of which is in Smith Lane, Bradford.
The Osmond family arrived in the UK on Tuesday for a week-long visit, the highlight of which will be a gala weekend to raise money for The Elizabeth Foundation.
As part of the trip Merrill Osmond, 35-year-old Justin and Shane, 33, visited the Bradford family centre to find out where the money they raise will be spent.
They were greeted by centre manager Margaret Southern, who showed them round the facility. Justin spoke about his own experiences of learning to speak and Merrill explained: “We hope to be able to raise money and greater awareness for the children and to help you where we can.”
They took time to interact and speak with the children and their parents, including 36-year-old Nicola Bentley, of Cleckheaton , whose five-year-old son Joseph thrived after attending the Elizabeth Foundation.
Nicola, who had e-mailed the Osmond family in 2009 to ask for help when the charity was struggling for funding, said: “I appealed to Merrill as one parent of a deaf child to another. Justin responded and it is so lovely to finally meet them today.
“I am so thankful that we found The Elizabeth Foundation and we are going to raise so much money and awareness with the Osmond name because they have so many fans. Deaf children are just like other children if given the right start in life.”
A gala dinner takes place on Saturday at the Queen’s Hotel in Leeds featuring Merrill Osmond, Justin Osmond, singer Jane McDonald and BBC Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood.
The event will include a meal, entertainment and silent auction, all in aid of The Elizabeth Foundation.
