A six-year-old Keighley girl has become one of the youngest to complete Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk.

Ada Wood and her mum Amy Hield, of Glen Lee Lane, completed the 200-mile route in just under a fortnight.

They set off from St Bees in Cumbria on Saturday, August 11, and arrived at Robin Hood’s Bay on Friday.

Amy said: “I wasn’t sure how it would go, but Ada was keen to do it and she is a fit and determined young lady, so I thought we would give it a go.

“We camped along the route, so we didn’t need to commit to any timescale by booking accommodation and we could drop out at any time. But Ada kept up with the average of 15 miles a day without any problem and we finished it, alongside adults who had started the walk on the same day.”

She said that according to a guidebook, the youngest-known person to complete the walk was a girl aged seven – who finished it with her father in 13 days – so Ada was curious to know if she was a new record holder.

Amy added: “It was such an amazing chance for Ada to learn things in a first-hand way. Her concept of distance and the size of her country is probably better than lots of adults now, as is her knowledge of working farms, mountains, moors and the weather!

“Children have an amazing capacity when they are motivated. If we follow their interests to their natural conclusion by offering them the right opportunities to extend their learning they can achieve brilliant things.”

Ada and Amy kept a diary during their walk, which can be viewed at mobilytrip.com/journals/DmNXMdtgCc71HiNhyJP7iMzAS.
