Crafts and cakes were among the creations taking top prizes at the Burley Show today.

Visitors flocked to Queen’s Hall in Main Street for the annual event, which Angus MacIntosh, chairman of the Burley Gardeners’ Association, said was always very well attended.

“We have been running this one for about 30 years now, gradually expanding each year,” he said. “Because of the weather, entries in the fruit and vegetable classes have taken a hammering, but the juniors and the product classes are as usual very buoyant. There are some amazing children’s entries. The cakes are stunning, they designed cards and designed an Olympic medal. There are photography classes and flowers.”

Stalls were held by organisations including the Burley Bridge Association, Burley Station Project and Burley in Bloom. Paintings and photography were on show at an art exhibition upstairs in the hall.

Gwen Cowley, who was looking around the show, said: “I think it’s lovely. The flowers are gorgeous. Some of the cards the children have done are really good.”

Meanwhile at the Queen’s Head across the road, entries were being judged in the pub’s pork pie competition.
