A lorry driver had a “lucky” escape when the vehicle he was driving, which was carrying fruit, crashed onto its side in Bradford.

The HGV overturned on Sticker Lane, close to the Dudley Hill roundabout, at around 6am on Saturday.

Police cordoned off part of the busy road between the junction with Fenby Avenue and Dudley Hill roundabout for around three hours while recovery teams worked in thick fog to remove the vehicle.

Firefighters from Odsal Fire Station, who were called to the scene, told how there was no need to call paramedics because the driver did not need treatment.

A West Yorkshire Fire Service spokesman said: “When we got there the vehicle was on its side. We were called to make sure the vehicle was safe and to clear a fuel leakage.

“The driver of the vehicle had got out and was walking around. He wasn’t injured and didn’t need any treatment. He was very lucky.”

The road was closed in both directions and officers stood at both ends of the cordon to redirect traffic, which did not appear to be affected by the road closure, but West Yorkshire Metro said bus services were delayed.

Two recovery vehicles could be seen parked alongside the HGV, while a worker used a ladder to climb onto the side of the lorry to direct the recovery operation.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “We were called at 6am to Sticker Lane to reports that an HGV had overturned and was blocking both carriageways. The driver wasn’t injured and a recovery operation took place.”

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but a fire service spokesman said it is believed a van may have pulled out in front of the lorry.

Witnesses or anyone with information should call police on 101.
