Projects that support young people could be in line for a grant of up to £5,000 from Bradford Council’s Youth Opportunity Fund.
A pot of £250,000 is available to different groups in the district, split evenly across the five areas in the district.
The fund provides grants to develop things to do for young people in the district.
Its aims are to: give a voice and influence to young people, particularly those facing disadvantage, in relation to things they can do; change the way local authorities and their partners provide activities for young people, especially in deprived neighbourhoods, so they reflect what young people want; provide opportunities for young people to develop their confidence, knowledge, skills and abilities; increase young people’s engagement and participation in activities and enable them to gain recognition and accreditation for their involvement and offer young people the opportunity to develop projects that increase their entrepreneurial skills.
Money has previously been granted to projects such as a pioneering youth cafe which operates from the basement of Bingley Pool . Young people at the cafe have recently been awarded £5,000 for activities including film making and screen-printing.
In addition pupils at Appleton Academy in Wyke were helped with funding to set up an after school club offering dragon boat racing.
Bids should be initiated and run by young people, and the proposed activities must be organised from within their local neighbourhood, and meets the needs of young people identified through the recent ward planning process.
It is expected that they will be supported by a bona-fide organisation and an experienced adult will be involved to ensure adequate support and deployment of any successful grant.
The deadline for applications for this second round of funding is 4.30pm on Friday, October 19, 2012. Then young volunteers from across each constituency will work alongside local councillors as part of Youth Opportunity Fund Area Panels to assess the bids and decide which will receive funding.
An application form and guidance notes are available by logging on to bradford.gov.uk/bmdc/education_and_skills/youth_services.
