A teenager who was caught running a sideline of cannabis sales at his family’s corner shop in Bradford has been locked up for nine months.
A stock of skunk cannabis, digital scales and a stash of cash was found when police raided Bell’s store in Whetley Lane, Girlington , Bradford, and arrested Sohail Ahmed, 18.
Prosecutor Jonathan Sharp told Bradford Crown Court it was “a small family business selling, among other things, cannabis.”
A small quantity of the Class B drug, and more cash, was found at Ahmed’s home, the court was told.
Ahmed, of Naples Street, Girlington, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis with intent to supply on June 14 last year.
The court heard yesterday he was in breach of a Youth Rehabilitation Order and had a previous conviction for possession of cannabis.
Mr Sharp said Ahmed was behind the shop counter with £132 of skunk cannabis and £370 in cash that was not kept in the till.
A further £640 in cash was seized from his home, along with dealer bags.
Digital scales and phones were also taken away by the police.
Ahmed admitted to officers that he was packing up cannabis at the shop and selling it to a circle of friends to fund his own use.
Ahmed’s barrister, Richard Gioserano, said: “The defendant and cannabis were found in the shop, but there is no evidence that the shop was being used as a front for it to be sold.”
Mr Gioserano said Ahmed’s father, himself jailed for a drugs offence in the past, now owned a successful building business and wanted his son to join him in the company.
Ahmed hoped to take that career path and was due to start an engineering and plumbing course at Bradford College.
The judge, Recorder Patrick Palmer, said only a period of custody in a young offender institution would meet the seriousness of the case.
