A man who fell to his death at one of the region’s best known landmarks, was 82-years-old, police said last night.
According to preliminary examinations, Geoffrey Alan Goodrich died from multiple injuries suffered in the fatal fall at the quarry at Ilkley ’s Cow and Calf rocks last Wednesday morning, a West Yorkshire Police spokesman revealed.
The pensioner, who lived in Skipton , was formally named yesterday as investigations continue into the incident which occurred while dozens of walkers and climbers were visiting the viewpoint.
Officers are not treating the incident as suspicious.
It is understood Mr Goodrich was wearing outdoor clothing when he fell about 50ft and several people near to the scene gave witness statements to officers.
The alarm was raised and emergency services were called to the scene at about 10.45am and immediately cordoned off the quarry area while investigations took place into the cause of the fall.
Officers directed members of the public away from the quarry and examined the rocks above the scene, while an ambulance crew and paramedics attended to the faller. However, Mr Goodrich, who was not believed to have been a climber, was pronounced dead at the scene, while daytrippers visiting the Cow and Calf rocks were visibly shocked and saddened by the incident.
Yesterday the area was packed with visitors, including climbers, near to the spot where Mr Goodrich’s body was found An inquest into Mr Goodrich’s death has not yet been opened, staff at the Bradford Coroner’s office said, but it is expected to open soon..
Mr Goodrich’s fatal fall came three years after a healthcare worker jumped to his death at Cow and Calf rocks.
Graeme Pykett, 42, died in July 2009, after falling 50ft from the top of the rocks at the popular beauty spot.
